The Executive Secretary, Edo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (EDSPHCDA), Dr. Coulson Oahimire Osoikhia, today, Thursday, the 27th of August, 2026, embarked on an integrated supportive supervision tour of selected Primary Healthcare Facilities such as Clara Oshiomhole Comprehensive Health Center, Ojah PHC, Makeke PHC, Igarra and Uneme Osu PHC in Akoko Edo Local Government Area of Edo State
The exercise was aimed at assessing healthcare service delivery, identifying critical gaps, and developing strategies to strengthen the capacity and functionality of Primary Healthcare Centres at the community level.
The supervision was carried out alongside members of the Agency’s team, including the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, Mrs. Esther Ajayi-David; Technical Assistant to the Executive Secretary, Mr. Nosa Oreye; and UNICEF Representative, Mr. Kingsley Okonkwo. The team was accompanied by the Medical Officer of Health, Akoko Edo LGA, Dr. Gift Abu Agbokhade, who facilitated the tour of the various facilities.
The team commenced the visit at Clara Oshiomhole Comprehensive Health Center, Egbedu, Akoko Edo LGA, a facility supported by UNICEF and the Global Fund.
During the visit, the Executive Secretary assessed key components of the Primary Healthcare Centre, including immunization services, family planning, laboratory services, pharmacy operations, data management systems, and other essential areas required for effective healthcare delivery.
Dr. Osoikhia emphasized the importance of accurate and reliable data, particularly in immunization and family planning, noting that data-driven decision-making remains critical for improving health outcomes and ensuring targeted interventions.
The team also visited Makeke Primary Healthcare Centre, where the Executive Secretary inspected the facility and identified areas requiring improvement to enhance service delivery.
At Ojah Primary Healthcare Centre, which was renovated by the Akoko Edo Local Government, the Executive Secretary assessed the facility’s needs and highlighted plans to seek partnerships to support the construction of a borehole. This intervention is aimed at improving access to water supply and creating a more conducive environment for healthcare services.
The supervision tour continued at Uneme Osu Primary Healthcare Centre, where Dr. Osoikhia and his team reviewed the facility’s operational needs and explored possible areas of support to improve its functionality.
The final stop was Igarra Primary Healthcare Centre, where the Executive Secretary inspected medical equipment provided supplied by EDSPHCDA and assessed its contribution towards improving healthcare delivery at the facility.
Speaking on the exercise, Dr. Coulson Oahimire Osoikhia explained that the visit was beyond routine supportive supervision, as it was also an opportunity to identify facility-specific challenges and explore strategic partnerships that would promote sustainable improvements in Primary Healthcare Centers.
He noted that the Agency will continue to collaborate with development partners and organizations such as the Society for Family Health (SFH), Private Sector Health Alliance of Nigeria (PSHAN), and other stakeholders to support infrastructure development, capacity building, equipment improvement, and overall strengthening of primary healthcare services in Edo State.
The Executive Secretary also reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to ensuring that Primary Healthcare Centers across Edo State remain functional, well-equipped, and capable of delivering quality, accessible, and community-centered healthcare services.
